For 80 percent of the people on Earth, the internet as we know it does not exist. Outernet has built a new way to share information for those people. The Chicago-based start-up takes content from the world wide web, and broadcasts it from seven geostationary satellites. Content is cached back on Earth in Outernet receivers attached to a satellite receiver that can be located in the most disconnected places on Earth. Data can then be pulled up locally free of charge on any device, similar to wifi. A single satellite receiver can provide a community with an up-to-date library, including disaster warnings, crop prices, plans for building farm equipment, and government information.
