Chicago Innovation and Rivet launch new podcast, Innovating…Chicago-Style, to showcase stories behind the region’s most innovative companies and founders

CHICAGO – December 19, 2017: Chicago Innovation, an organization that educates, connects and celebrates innovators in the Chicago region, has partnered with Rivet, a smart audio creation and distribution company, to produce a new podcast series, Innovating…Chicago-Style, spotlighting winners of the Chicago Innovation Awards over the last 15 years.

The first few episodes include conversations with:

  • Cleversafe founder Chris Gladwin, discussing how he built his company to tackle a problem that didn’t exist yet, and how he kept his team intact over six years without paying customers—before selling the company to IBM for more than $1.3 billion.

  • Tastytrade co-CEO Kristi Ross, who shares lessons learned in building one of the country’s fastest-growing financial news networks—but who almost gave up in the early days.

  • LoggerHead Tools founder Dan Brown, who received a Chicago Innovation Award for a Bionic Wrench, only to see the design later ripped off by Sears—over which he won a $6 million patent infringement lawsuit.

Chicago Innovation Award winners to be profiled in upcoming episodes include The Chicago Public Library, Cara, Narrative Science, Reverb and others.

“We’ve named 255 winners of the Chicago Innovation Awards over the last 16 years,” Chicago Innovation executive director Luke Tanen said. “Each winner has a story to tell, rich with surprising ‘aha moments,’ unexpected failures, and crucial lessons learned along the way. We’re eager to tell these stories through Innovating…Chicago-Style and excited to partner with Rivet.”

This year’s Chicago Innovation Awards highlight how the city’s tech and startup scene is not as much the boys club that it used to be. Mayor Lori Lightfoot alluded to as much in her opening address, highlighting that of the 21 winners at Wednesday night’s awards, 11 were women-led businesses and nine were founded by people of color.
