AbbVie is a research-based, global biopharmaceutical company that employs nearly 30,000 passionate employees. And they are on a mission to bring innovative new medicines to patients as fast as they can, even though everyone knows developing a new therapy takes a long time and some complex processes. But, a group of passionate and dedicated employees at AbbVie who relish in challenging the status quo realized that there were opportunities to speed things up. And so, the Cross-Functional Modeling Forum (CMF) was born. Put simply, the CMF enables AbbVie to manufacture supplies for clinical trial and medicines for patients in a more cost and time efficient manner. Since it began, the CMF has developed computer-based tools that enhance AbbVie’s process understanding, process design and scale up of commercial and pipeline products. The CMF has been instrumental in driving forward innovations like advanced computational modeling, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning to accelerate the development of new medicines. The CMF’s hybrid computational methodologies have enabled time efficient transient simulations of some of the most critical processes, namely lyophilization, hot melt extrusion, bioreactor processes, drug dissolution and large powder systems.
